WHAT IS A ZINE?
A zine (pronounced ZEEN, short for fanzine) is a small-circulation, non-commercial work self-published or published by a small, independent publisher. Typically zines are created using original or appropriated texts and images intended to be reproduced using a copy machine so they are free or inexpensive to make. Zines often serve as form of communication for alternative or marginalized communities helping build connections and share information.
The first known zine was a sci-fi publication created by a science club in Chicago in the 1930s called The Comet. Zines surged in the 1970’s due to photocopy machine technology, especially among the punk scene with issues like Sniffin’ Glue and Punk. Zines flourished again in the 1990s during the riot grrrl movement where zine creators used the medium to fight for representation of women in the male-dominated punk scene and empower women and girls to start bands, make zines and be heard.
