LAST NIGHT’S MIDTERM ELECTION OUTCOME
Amarillo, TX — Women’s March Executive Director Rachel O’Leary Carmona released the following statement:
“While ballots are still being counted in many contested elections, there was a clear winner last night: reproductive rights.
“Voters in California, Vermont, Michigan, and the deep red states of Kentucky and Montana considered ballot questions on abortion. And in every state they overwhelmingly decided that ONLY women have the right to decide what’s best for their own bodies.
“Pollsters and pundits were telling us that voters were “over” abortion and only cared about the economy, but we knew they were wrong, because abortion rights ARE an economic issue, and every day women know that.
“Let this be a lesson to the Republican Party as well. When you run a platform solely based on racist culture wars and stripping people of their rights, you will lose. Know this: as long as you keep coming after women, Women’s March is here to make sure you keep losing.
“We fought like hell all summer to make the stakes of this election clear. People showed up and showed out, but the fight is not over. Women shouldn’t have their bodies on the line on every ballot. We deserve better and will fight until we get it.
“I am thrilled to see resounding victories for abortion, for Democrats, and for our democracy. We know the road ahead is long, but today we celebrate hard earned victories.”
