2/8: Women’s March Statement on Accusations against Lt. Governor of Virginia, Justin Fairfax
“We believe Dr. Vanessa Tyson. We believe Meredith Watson. We believe survivors, who have nothing to gain and everything to lose when they come forward and speak out about abuse. Justice looks different for every survivor, but all survivors deserve justice, and almost none receive it. Dr. Tyson knows this. Ms. Watson knows this. They are speaking out anyway, bravely, courageously.
For too long, anti-Blackness and violence against women have been swept under the rug, allowing perpetrators access to seats of power—from the Virginia Governor’s office to the White House. No more. We cannot enable or excuse abuse any more than we can enable and excuse racism. We need avenues in place to encourage accountability. We need paths forward for people who cause harm. And above all, we need support for survivors.”
